So I guess lowballers don’t just exist on Craigslist. They also cruise neighborhoods IRL.
As I’ve mentioned, my Camaro lives at my parents’ house due to a lack of space here. Evidently my dad had his garage door open and some guy saw the taillights and felt the need to make my dad a very generous lowball offer for it. It needs bodywork and paint but $2500 for a ‘71 Camaro that’s complete and running? C’mon.
So the real question is, which one of you was it?

They are literally everywhere!
On my way home with my 350X in the truck a guy at a gas stop came up and said “I got five hunnerd dollar bills for that. Cash money!” Sure! Add 20 more and we have a deal!
People really believe all these shows like Counting Cars, Gas Monkey and American Pickers are real life. It’s a bit sad.

I don’t know if it’s a case of ignorance, cheapness or if the guy was trying to take advantage of my 70 year old dad thinking he owned the car. If it was the last one it pisses me off even more.

I can almost guarantee it was option 3. Or a combination of all 3 really.

You know why people low ball? Because some people take those offers . I’ve gotten people to almost half their asking price on motorcycles. Sure, we’re enthusiasts, so we see the value in old cars and bikes, but there are people out there who buy stuff on an emotional whim, and then five or six years later when it’s a little dirty and maybe has a small mechanical problem or two, they think it’s “junk” and will practically give it away.

I get that but those were people who actually had their cars up for sale. Walking up to an old man and making a lowball offer out of the blue seems a bit predatory to me. If there was a For Sale sign on it then that would be a different story. Then (if it was his car) he would have had the chance to see what the real market value was and if he didn’t then that would be on him.

Hmm, this is a tough line to make. On the one hand, we all have the freedom to make decisions for ourselves, but I also don’t want little old ladies giving away their retirement funds to shysters.
In this case, neither the offerer nor your father could have looked up market values, the guy just saw something he wanted and offered an amount he felt it was worth. In a way, this is the most honest possible way of doing business.
How can you know unless you ask?
